Organizational Setting

The International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA) Laboratories are located in Seibersdorf, approximately 45 km south of Vienna. Their main objective is to contribute to the implementation of the IAEA's programmes in food and agriculture, human health, physical and chemical sciences, water resources, industry, environmental management (terrestrial), radiation protection and safeguards verification.

The Safeguards Analytical Laboratory (SAL), which is a Section of the IAEA's Laboratories at Seibersdorf, analyses samples taken for verification of nuclear material accountancy and for environmental sampling by safeguards inspectors in support of the Department of Safeguards under INFCIRC/153-type safeguards agreements and the additional protocol to safeguards agreements (INFCIRC/540). SAL has three units: the Chemical Analysis Unit, the Mass Spectrometry Unit and the Clean Laboratory Unit. These are supported by the QA/IT group.

Assignment

The SAL Analytical Services Office (SAS Office) is located within the Chemical Analysis Unit, and is the focal point for the receipt, coordination and scheduling of sample flow in the labs, the quality assurance of analytical results, the reporting of analytical results to the Department of Safeguards, and the preparation of nuclear material shipment documentation. The senior laboratory technician reports directly to the head of the Chemical Analysis Unit, and carries out the following duties:
  • Organization of sample routing and provision of analytical requests to the laboratory staff;
  • Calculation of results and the preparation of analytical reports to the Department of Safeguards;
  • Responsible for quality checking analytical results against minimum established quality assurance guidelines;
  • Organization of external quality control results and provision of final reports;
  • Preparation of documentation papers for nuclear material shipments;
  • Oversight of the stock of reference materials, making sure that levels and types of reference materials are maintained at levels suitable for operational continuity;
  • Supervision of the SAS Office laboratory technician.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with chemists or similarly technically-minded staff in a multi-cultural environment.
  • Good organizing skills: Ability to prioritize work assignments, organize own schedule, perform routine work independently, meet deadlines, and adapt to constantly changing demands and multitasking.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively under pressure during periods of high sample load.
  • Knowledge of, or practical experience with, a laboratory information management system or related software tools highly desirable.
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office 2003 (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint), which is IAEA's standard.

Education and Experience

  • Completed secondary education, preferably with specialization in the field of chemistry and/or information technology.
  • Higher education or training in chemistry and/or analytical chemistry desirable.
  • At least 10 years of relevant working experience in total, with at least three years of experience in an analytical chemistry or related laboratory.
  • Practical experience working within either an ISO 9000 or ISO 17025 quality system desirable.
  • English grammar test to IAEA standard (level 2).
  • Fluency in spoken and written English. Knowledge of German desirable.

Remuneration

The IAEA offers an attractive remuneration package including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at €43 545 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance), six weeks' annual vacation, pension plan and health insurance.
