Organizational Setting

The Waste Technology Section is located in the Division of Nuclear Fuel Cycle and Waste Technology in the Department of Nuclear Energy. The main functions of the Waste Disposal Unit are to implement safe and cost-effective technologies for the predisposal and for the near-surface disposal management of radioactive waste and to build confidence in technologies for geologic disposal of high level waste.

Assignment

Under the supervision of the Head of the Section, the Nuclear/Chemical Engineer advises and assists the Director of the Division on matters related to the management and disposal of radioactive waste with special reference to near-surface disposal of low and intermediate level radioactive waste resulting from nuclear power and nuclear energy applications. In particular, the incumbent:
  • Contributes to maintaining the knowledge of nuclear waste disposal technologies by organizing scientific and technical meetings and the exchange of information;
  • Develops and fosters the exchange of current knowledge in the field of safe near-surface disposal of radioactive wastes by preparing guidelines, manuals, reports and other documents;
  • Assists in providing advice to Member States on scientific, technical and socio-economic aspects of the near-surface disposal of radioactive wastes;
  • Provides technical assistance to Member States through relevant technical co-operation projects (training courses, study tours, equipment procurement, etc.);
  • Collaborates with other divisions of the Agency, and with other international organizations, on matters related to the disposal of radioactive waste;
  • Contributes to the preparation of the Agency's programme, financial plans, annual reports, etc.

Education and Experience

  • Advanced university degree or equivalent in a field of science or engineering related to the duties of the post.
  • At least 10 years of practical experience in the field of radioactive waste disposal, preferably near-surface, some of which should have been at the international level.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • General knowledge of the technical disciplines involved in predisposal management of radioactive waste.
  • In-depth knowledge of state-of-the-art waste disposal technologies.
  • General knowledge of the waste management situation in developing countries.
  • Knowledge and practical experience in organizing and conducting scientific and technical meetings.
  • Proven organizational and managerial skills to plan and implement programme activities.
  • Good report writing, editorial and presentation skills.
  • Ability to analyse, interpret and apply Agency waste safety documents.
  • Good communication skills so as to co-operate effectively with colleagues in a multicultural environment with respect for sensitivity and diversity and to interact with counterparts in Member States.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English. Knowledge of French, Spanish or Russian desirable.

Remuneration

The Agency offers an attractive remuneration package including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at US $58 041, a variable post adjustment which currently amounts to US $24 087*, dependency benefits, rental subsidy, education grant, relocation and repatriation expenses; 6 weeks' annual vacation, home leave, pension plan and health insurance.
