Assignment

Under the general direction and policy guidance of the Director General and the Deputy Director General for Management, the Director of the Division of Public Information is responsible for planning and implementing a comprehensive communication and outreach programme focused on the Agency's role as the global intergovernmental forum for nuclear issues, including the peaceful applications of nuclear technology and the verification of States' non-proliferation commitments. The main duties are to:
  • provide a general strategic direction on the Agency's public information policy and outreach activities including advising IAEA senior management on general public information strategy and issues;
  • act as the Agency's chief spokesperson;
  • direct and manage the Division's activities, which include media relations, audio-visual services, outreach activities and publications;
  • lead and implement the Division's programme, and manage the human and financial resources assigned to the Division in an effective and efficient manner, including guiding and supervising staff and ensuring accountability for results;
  • coordinate the planning of joint information work with the United Nations and other relevant bodies;
  • liaise on public information matters with diplomatic missions, national authorities and intergovernmental organizations, including specialized agencies and civil society;
  • perform other duties and functions as required by the Director General.

Education and Experience

  • Advanced university degree in journalism, political science or a discipline related to international relations and public information;
  • At least 15 years' professional experience in public information at the international level;
  • Experience in developing and implementing public information and media strategy in an international setting, including handling media briefings;
  • Demonstrated competency in programme and resource management and full familiarity with the trends, modern practices and means of dissemination of public information.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Proven track record of excellent leadership and experience in managing staff and resources, including the ability to motivate a team in a multicultural environment;
  • Ability to plan strategically and operate within a results-based management framework;
  • Excellent presentation and communication skills, including the ability to represent the Agency effectively vis-à-vis the public and in the media;
  • Good interpersonal skills and flexibility;
  • Grasp of political sensitivities and trends;
  • Fluency in English is essential. Working knowledge of German is highly desirable. Some knowledge of French, Spanish, Russian, Arabic or Chinese desirable;
  • Knowledge of and experience in the nuclear field, particularly non-proliferation, are clearly an asset.

Remuneration

The Agency offers an attractive remuneration package including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at US $83 587 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance), a variable post adjustment which currently amounts to US $44 301*, dependency benefits, rental subsidy, diplomatic status, education grant, relocation and repatriation expenses; 6 weeks' annual vacation, home leave, pension plan and health insurance.
