Organizational Setting

The Marine Environmental Studies Laboratory (MESL) is one of three laboratories at the Marine Environment Laboratory in Monaco. It is staffed by three professional and four technical support staff. Working with various UN and regional organizations throughout the world, MESL provides technical support for the monitoring and assessment of marine pollution. Research focuses on case studies of metal and organic contaminants in the marine coastal zone. MESL supports marine analytical chemistry by organizing global intercomparison exercises, producing marine reference materials and running training courses for the analysis of pollutants in the marine environment.

Assignment

Under the supervision of the Head of MESL, the incumbent will manage both the inductively coupled plasma - mass spectrometer (ICP-MS) facility and the inorganic aspects of the data quality assurance programme. Specific duties are to:
  • Upgrade, optimize and develop ICP-MS facilities for the rapid and ultrasensitive analysis of trace elements and radionuclides;
  • Conduct analyses of elements and radionuclides in marine samples, and assist in the environmental interpretation of the results;
  • Train and supervise personnel as well as Member States' scientists and fellows in ICP-MS use for analyses of elements and radionuclides;
  • Contribute to the data quality assurance programme for metal analyses by organizing worldwide interlaboratory studies and laboratory proficiency tests;
  • Organize training courses for the determination of metals in the marine environment, including consideration of sampling, good QA/QC procedures, and instrumental analyses.

Education and Experience

  • Advanced university degree in analytical chemistry.
  • At least 6 years of relevant experience using ICP-MS, including routine instrumental operation and maintenance.
  • Experience in data quality management, interlaboratory studies, proficiency tests and the production of reference materials desirable.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong background in analytical chemistry.
  • Good knowledge of the ICP-MS instrument so as to be able to take care of the day-to-day maintenance and keep the machine upgraded and optimized.
  • Knowledge of marine geochemistry/chemical oceanography an advantage.
  • Good communication skills to interact effectively in a multicultural environment with respect and sensitivity for diversity.
  • Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Fluency in English. Knowledge of French or Arabic desirable.

Remuneration

The Agency offers an attractive remuneration package including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at US $49 149 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance), a variable post adjustment which currently amounts to US $26 590*, dependency benefits, rental subsidy, education grant, relocation and repatriation expenses; 6 weeks' annual vacation, home leave, pension plan and health insurance.
