Organizational Setting

The Waste Technology Section is in the Division of Nuclear Fuel Cycle and Waste Technology of the Department of Nuclear Energy. The Section is in charge of the waste technology subprogramme, which has as its objective fostering safe, environmentally sound, cost-effective and sustainable strategies and technologies for managing radioactive waste in an increasing number of Member States.

Assignment

Under the guidance of the Director of the Division and the direction of the Section Head, to develop and implement the waste technology support programme providing assistance to Member States with regard to technology for and implementation of radioactive waste management, in particular in the area of sealed radioactive source management.

In particular:
  • to review and analyse the needs and situation in Member States with weak economies regarding implementing radioactive waste management technology activities;
  • to coordinate various technical cooperation activities in the subject area;
  • to keep abreast of the technologies and practices in the subject area and assess the potential and benefits of the application of such technologies and practices in developing Member States;
  • to prepare guidelines, manuals, reports and other documents on technical issues regarding radioactive waste management of interest to developing Member States;
  • to represent the Agency at meetings sponsored by national and international organizations and to maintain links with national and international organizations in the subject area;
  • to provide assistance as required to other activities of the Division which are relevant to his/her knowledge and experience and coordinate activities with other sections/divisions/departments.

Education and Experience

  • PhD or equivalent in nuclear or chemical engineering, physics or chemistry.
  • Minimum of 15 years of practical experience in the area of nuclear/chemical engineering and operational field experience in the area of radioactive waste management, in particular sealed radioactive source management, including 5 years at the international level.
  • Experience in evaluating international projects and managing such projects in a multicultural environment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to formulate general concepts in the area of assignment.
  • Good report writing skills and editorial capability an advantage.
  • Good communication skills to deal with peers and management.
  • Knowledge of the problems faced by developing countries in radioactive waste management, in particular institutional waste and sealed radioactive sources.
  • Knowledge of the principles of human resources and financial management and the ability to apply this knowledge in allocating resources for the achievement of Agency objectives.
  • Very good command of written and spoken English essential.
  • Fluency in French, Russian or Spanish desirable.

Remuneration

The Agency offers an attractive remuneration package including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at US $70 742 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance), a variable post adjustment which currently amounts to US $36 857*, dependency benefits, rental subsidy, diplomatic status, education grant, relocation and repatriation expenses; 6 weeks' annual vacation, home leave, pension plan and health insurance.
