Organizational Setting

The Nuclear Power Technology Development Section is one of two sections in the Division of Nuclear Power and its main objectives are (1) coordination of the International Project on Innovative Nuclear Reactors and Fuel Cycles (INPRO); (2) technology development of advanced reactor lines; and, (3) support for non-electric applications of nuclear power. The Section has an annual regular budget and additional resources based on extrabudgetary contributions by Member States.

The working environment is collaborative and involves working in groups of peers. The Section has a team of 18 Professional and 6 General Service staff.

Main purpose

As part of a team led by the Section Head, the Nuclear Engineer develops and implements the Agency's activities on technology development and application for gas cooled reactors (GCR).

Role

The Nuclear Engineer is an expert in GCR and a facilitator, encouraging cooperative design and development through communication with members of the Technical Working Group on Gas Cooled Reactors (TWG-GCR) and researchers in the subject area.

Partnerships

The incumbent engages technical counterparts in Member State institutions in programme planning and implementation to ensure effective transfer and sharing of technical and developmental know-how and promotes partnership building with other relevant institutions. Furthermore, he/she works closely with other members of the Section and appropriate technical departments within the Agency to ensure effective utilization of technical inputs and the integration of continuous inputs received from Member States and the development community.

Functions / Key Results Expected

  • Provides technical and programme leadership in the assigned technical areas by identifying key future trends and technology development needs with the assistance of others in the field, including Member States.
  • Prepares and leads meetings resulting in the production of Agency documents in GCR technology fields.
  • Communicates the results of Member State and Agency activities to a wider audience, including other Member States, through the preparation of papers, articles and documents for publication and also for higher level management, and compiles new information for the updating of publications.
  • Prepares and monitors contracts for research or for external assistance and reviews the results achieved.
  • Makes recommendations regarding and evaluates technical cooperation proposals and acts as a technical officer for technical cooperation projects.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge in the field of GCR technology, with broad experience in such areas as technology development of new reactor concepts, nuclear reactor design including safety aspects, reactor physics and nuclear fuel options.
  • Knowledge of the technology and physics of other reactor designs and the key issues associated with their application.
  • Ability to foster innovation in the subject area.
  • Project management skills.
  • Strong technical writing skills for producing and reviewing documents in related fields.
  • Strong communication skills for the presentation of technical papers at international meetings.
  • Teamwork: Proven ability to participate effectively in a multinational and multidisciplinary team by working collaboratively and sharing knowledge.
  • Customer orientation: Ability to work in partnership with internal and external counterparts.

Education, Experience and Language Skills

  • Advanced university (or equivalent) degree in engineering or nuclear reactor technology.
  • Seven years of professional experience in the subject area.
  • Experience in working with different international organizations and in enhancing international cooperation.
  • Fluency in English. Knowledge of other official UN languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish).

Remuneration

The Agency offers an attractive remuneration package including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at US $61 834 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance), a variable post adjustment which currently amounts to US $31 164*, dependency benefits, rental subsidy, education grant, relocation and repatriation expenses; 6 weeks' annual leave, home leave, pension plan and health insurance.
