Organizational Setting

The main objective of the Division of Human Health is to enhance Member States' capabilities to address their needs related to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of health problems through the development and application of nuclear techniques within a framework of quality assurance. Priorities are given to the needs of developing countries. Delivery mechanisms are through the Agency's technical cooperation programme, coordinated research projects, advisory services and the collection, analysis and dissemination of information.

The Nuclear Medicine Section is one of four sections in the Division of Human Health. Its primary objective is to enhance Member States' capabilities to employ in vivo and in vitro diagnostic and therapeutic nuclear medicine technologies efficiently for managing their main health problems and for undertaking related basic and clinical research.

Main purpose

As a member of a team led by the Section Head, the Nuclear Medicine Physician coordinates and supports research, provides technical and advisory services and collects, analyses and disseminates information related to the application of nuclear techniques using in vivo and in vitro unsealed radiation sources in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases and in basic and applied research in the field of human health.

Role

The Nuclear Medicine Physician plays several key roles: technical adviser and research coordinator, helping to ensure the efficient and effective development and implementation of research and training; adviser to the Section, the Division and other Agency staff on programmatic, scientific and technical matters related to his/her field of expertise; and provides support for collaborative efforts aimed at a synergistic approach to nuclear medicine development in Member States.

Partnerships

The Nuclear Medicine Physician engages with national counterparts in Member States' institutions in the area of programme planning and implementation to ensure the effective transfer and sharing of technical information and develops partnerships with appropriate UN and other international organizations and institutions. Also, he/she works closely with the appropriate departments, including close collaboration on technical cooperation activities with both intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations, to ensure the effective utilization of technical inputs to programme design and implementation.

Functions / Key Results Expected

  • Develops and implements coordinated research projects on the application of radionuclides for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases, including the evaluation of research contracts and the publication of results.
  • Organizes scientific and advisory meetings, serves in scientific missions and represents the Agency at relevant meetings and conferences.
  • Develops and implements projects aiming at applying quality management in nuclear medicine practice in developing Member States.
  • Supports the technical cooperation programme through the evaluation of relevant project requests, by developing work plans and assisting with the implementation of expert assignments, training and the purchase of equipment.
  • Coordinates work with other national and international organizations and supports the Section's collaborative efforts with leading scientific societies aimed at nuclear medicine development in Member States.
  • Prepares reports, proceedings and scientific publications.
  • Collaborates on joint Section/Division initiatives and cross-cutting activities.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • In-depth knowledge of diagnostic nuclear medicine.
  • Basic knowledge of radiopharmacy; adequate knowledge of nuclear medicine instrumentation and the organization of nuclear medicine services.
  • Working knowledge of complementary imaging modalities, such as CT (computer tomography), US (ultrasound) and MRI (magnetic resonance imaging), and of radiation protection and waste management as applied to the use of unsealed sources of radiation.
  • Analytical skills: Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Skills in strategic planning and policy development.
  • Communication skills:

  • Computer skills: MS-Word, PowerPoint, Excel.

Education, Experience and Language Skills

  • University degree in medicine with a postgraduate specialization degree in nuclear medicine. Training in diagnostic radiology desirable.
  • At least seven years of professional experience in the field of clinical nuclear medicine and in conducting basic and clinical research, possibly in an academic environment.
  • Good national and international standing in the area of his/her specialization and association with international societies.
  • Experience in managing international projects.
  • Recent publications in international peer reviewed journals and/or other relevant publications.
  • Experience in nuclear oncology, including therapeutic applications of nuclear medicine, and up-to-date experience with PET (positron emission tomography) are desirable.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English. Knowledge of Spanish would be desirable.

Remuneration

The Agency offers an attractive remuneration package including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at US $61 834 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance), a variable post adjustment which currently amounts to US $35 307*, dependency benefits, rental subsidy, education grant, relocation and repatriation expenses; 6 weeks' annual leave, home leave, pension plan and health insurance.
