Organizational Setting

The main objective of the Nutritional and Health-related Environmental Studies Section, which is in the Division of Human Health, is to assist IAEA Member States in their efforts to combat malnutrition by contributing technical expertise in the use of nuclear, in particular stable isotope, techniques in the development and evaluation of nutritional interventions. Malnutrition in IAEA Member States covers a wide spectrum - from undernutrition to overnutrition - and priority areas include nutrition and HIV/AIDS, childhood obesity and sustainable strategies to combat micronutrient deficiencies.

Main purpose

As a team member reporting to the Section Head, the Nutrition Specialist will formulate and implement nutrition projects to combat malnutrition in all its forms in IAEA Member States.

Role

The Nutrition Specialist is an expert, in particular in the use of nuclear techniques in nutrition, within the Section, and a key contributor to the IAEA's activities in human nutrition.

Partnerships

The Nutrition Specialist works closely with staff members within the Section and with programme management officers in the Department of Technical Cooperation. He/she establishes and maintains collaborative relationships with counterparts in coordinated research projects (CRPs) and in projects supported by the IAEA technical cooperation programme, and continuously exchanges information with international experts in nutrition and relevant colleagues in other UN agencies.

Functions / Key Results Expected

  • Conceptualize, design and implement CRPs. This includes evaluation of proposals for research contracts and agreements, organization of technical meetings and preparation of reports and other relevant documents.
  • Provide technical assistance to nutrition projects supported by the IAEA technical cooperation programme. This includes evaluation of project concepts, development of project designs and workplans, planning and implementation of training courses and coordination meetings and participation in missions to IAEA recipient countries.
  • Develop guidelines and distance learning modules on nuclear techniques in nutrition.
  • Organize technical meetings and consultants meetings to review current knowledge in nutrition.
  • Prepare reports, proceedings and scientific publications.
  • Represent the IAEA at international meetings as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent knowledge of nutrition, especially at the international level.
  • Excellent knowledge in biochemistry and physiology.
  • Good knowledge of relevant analytical techniques.
  • Understanding of the specific needs and conditions of developing countries as regards nutrition.
  • Communication skills:
    • Strong presentation skills;
    • Ability to prepare technical documents of a high scientific and technical quality and accuracy.
  • Interpersonal skills:
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with IAEA staff at all levels, with representatives of Member States and with external counterparts;
    • Demonstrated ability to work in a multicultural environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity.

Education, Experience and Language Skills

  • PhD in nutrition, nutritional biochemistry, physiology or a related field.
  • At least 7 years of relevant professional experience in nutrition, including at least 5 years of experience with nuclear techniques in nutrition and experience with nutritional interventions in developing countries.
  • Experience with international project coordination.
  • Teaching experience would be desirable.
  • Recent publications in international peer reviewed journals and/or other relevant publications.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English. Working knowledge of French and/or Spanish is an advantage.

Remuneration

The Agency offers an attractive remuneration package including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at US $61 834 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance), a variable post adjustment which currently amounts to US $35 307*, dependency benefits, rental subsidy, education grant, relocation and repatriation expenses; 6 weeks' annual leave, home leave, pension plan and health insurance.
