Organizational Setting

The Nuclear Knowledge Management Unit is located in the INIS (International Nuclear Information System) and Nuclear Knowledge Management Section within the Department of Nuclear Energy and is responsible for implementing the IAEA's subprogramme on nuclear knowledge management (NKM). The objectives of the subprogramme are to increase awareness and understanding in Member States of the need for sustaining knowledge and expertise in nuclear science and technology and to effectively serve the knowledge management needs of Member States.

The knowledge maintenance group is part of the Nuclear Knowledge Management Unit. It is responsible for implementing in-house NKM activities in the Department, generating and implementing methodology and guidance documents, ensuring thesaurus maintenance and providing NKM services.

Main purpose

The Group Leader participates in: (a) the design of comprehensive methodologies and tools for the establishment of effective NKM programmes both in Member States and within the IAEA; and (b) the implementation (methodology transfer, guidance and best practices for knowledge management) and evaluation of knowledge management activities in Member States.

Role

The Group Leader is: (1) a manager and a team leader who provides guidance and ensures that tasks and activities are structured and implemented efficiently and effectively; (2) an expert in the development of taxonomies, knowledge maps, gateways, methodology and other relevant NKM tools; (3) facilitator of international and regional cooperation projects and of networking in education and training; and (4) a scientific secretary for meetings on different aspects of NKM.

Partnerships

The Group Leader works closely: (a) with staff of the Unit to implement the IAEA NKM programme and to support national and regional initiatives in Member States in the NKM field; and (b) with managers in the INIS and Nuclear Knowledge Management Section and other areas of the IAEA with the purpose of coordinating cross-cutting NKM activities.

Functions / Key Results Expected

  • Contribute to the strategic planning and development of the INIS and Nuclear Knowledge Management Section, as a member of the Section's management team.
  • Plan and supervise the work of the group responsible for knowledge maintenance.
  • Develop taxonomies, knowledge maps, gateways and other appropriate tools that can be of use to Member States and IAEA staff, as well as provide methodology and guidance.
  • Coordinate and participate in the development and management of Internet based tools and information repositories for knowledge mining and knowledge analysis.
  • Evaluate information needs in the IAEA.
  • Support related technical cooperation activities.
  • Organize meetings, write papers, prepare and deliver presentations on NKM issues of importance to Member States.
  • Deliver lectures on various aspects of NKM.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • High degree of analytical and problem-solving skills, flexibility, sound judgement and initiative.
  • Proven skills to plan, organize and implement efficiently programme activities.
  • Proven project management skills, including experience in information management and knowledge management project coordination.
  • Excellent communication skills: report writing, editorial and presentation skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills to deal effectively with experts and national counterparts and to work in a multicultural environmental with respect and sensitivity for diversity.
  • Teamwork: ability to work collaboratively with colleagues to achieve organizational goals.

Education, Experience and Language Skills

  • Advanced university (or equivalent) degree in a nuclear discipline, preferably nuclear physics or nuclear engineering.
  • At least 7 years' working experience in the nuclear area (preferably in the nuclear industry) and knowledge management.
  • Experience in designing, planning and implementing training courses.
  • Experience in leading effectively multicultural and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English. Knowledge of French, Russian or Spanish is an advantage.

Remuneration

The Agency offers an attractive remuneration package including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at US $64 521 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance), a variable post adjustment which currently amounts to US $37 745*, dependency benefits, rental subsidy, education grant, relocation and repatriation expenses; 6 weeks' annual vacation, home leave, pension plan and health insurance.
