Organizational Setting

The Division of Nuclear Power provides core engineering, technological and management support to interested Member States in the field of nuclear power with special emphasis on the needs of developing countries. The main objectives are: to respond to the needs of interested Member States in improving their national nuclear power infrastructures and programmes and to evaluate the need for possible replacement technology within the country; to act as a catalyst for innovation and to assist, as appropriate, in the resolution of scientific and technological issues in the area of nuclear power, including electricity generation and its application for other uses such as desalination and hydrogen production; to manage, preserve and further enhance nuclear expertise and knowledge, competence and effectiveness in support of Member States; and to sustain the IAEA's unique position as the leading global international organization in the nuclear field.

The Nuclear Power Technology Development Section is one of two sections in the Division of Nuclear Power and its main objectives are: (1) coordination of the International Project on Innovative Nuclear Reactors and Fuel Cycles (INPRO); (2) technology advances in water cooled reactors aimed at improvements in economics and safety; and, (3) support for non-electricity applications of nuclear power. The Section has 17 Professional and 6 General Service staff, funded by the regular budget and extrabudgetary funds provided by Member States.

Main purpose

As part of a team led by the Division Director, the Nuclear Power Engineer formulates, develops, organizes and implements the IAEA's activities on technology development and design aspects of innovative nuclear reactors, fuel cycles and their potential application. This assignment is related to the IAEA's INPRO project, which is primarily an extrabudgetary programme.

Role

The Nuclear Power Engineer is a project manager, leading and implementing IAEA activities covering a broad range of practical aspects of design and technology development for innovative nuclear reactors, fuel cycles and other reactor concepts.

Partnerships

The Nuclear Power Engineer provides advice and guidance to national and international technical experts and decision-makers, as well as IAEA programme managers in other sections and departments on programmatic and cross cutting issues and initiatives. He/she also works with teams of experts to prepare and complete reports.

Functions / Key Results Expected

  • Formulate and implement the IAEA's activities in technology development and design aspects of innovative nuclear reactors and their application potential to meet IAEA programmatic objectives.
  • Initiate, plan and conduct scientific forums and meetings for Member States to review and discuss the status and progress achieved in the development of innovative reactors.
  • Provide assistance to users of the INPRO methodology and improve the methodology in the light of feedback from users.
  • Develop technical guidelines, documents and technical reports on important aspects of the IAEA's INPRO programme and update IAEA publications in the subject area.
  • Provide authoritative information, advice, guidance and cooperative contracts with countries starting to develop or deploy reactors, eliciting resources from potential donors.
  • Coordinate/liaise with external institutions and stakeholders. Gather, maintain and apply knowledge of international best practice and future trends in the subject area.
  • Collaborate on joint Section/Division initiatives and cross-cutting issues.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Technical expertise: Knowledge in design and technology development for innovative nuclear reactors, as well as technology and basic engineering of reactor designs and the key issues associated with their application, development and deployment.
  • Learning attitude: Willingness and ability to keep up-to-date with the latest technology developments in the subject area.
  • Strong interpersonal skills: Ability to operate effectively across organizational boundaries and to establish and maintain effective partnerships and working relations in a multicultural and multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity.
  • Strong analytical skills for producing and reviewing documents relating to innovative nuclear reactor systems.
  • Planning and organizing skills:
    • Demonstrated ability to set clearly defined objectives and to plan activities/projects well in advance, taking into account possible changing circumstances;
    • Ability to identify and organize the required resources and to monitor performance against deadlines and milestones.
  • Good communication skills. Ability to write technical documents in a structured manner and to deliver effective oral presentations at international meetings.

Education, Experience and Language Skills

  • Advanced university (or equivalent) degree in engineering (mechanical, nuclear, electrical, chemical, materials, etc.).
  • At least seven years of professional experience in the subject area.
  • Experience in international cooperation activities.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English. Ability in French, Russian or Spanish desirable.

Remuneration

The IAEA offers an attractive remuneration package including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at US $63 052 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance), a variable post adjustment which currently amounts to US $35 057*, dependency benefits, rental subsidy, education grant, relocation and repatriation expenses; 6 weeks' annual vacation, home leave, pension plan and health insurance.
