Organizational Setting

The Nuclear Knowledge Management Unit is located in the INIS (International Nuclear Information System) and Nuclear Knowledge Management Section within the Department of Nuclear Energy and is responsible for implementing the Agency's subprogramme on nuclear knowledge management. The objectives of the subprogramme are to increase awareness and understanding in Member States of the need for sustaining knowledge and expertise in nuclear science and technology and to effectively serve the knowledge management needs of Member States.

The knowledge preservation and networking group is part of the Nuclear Knowledge Management Unit. It is responsible for developing and coordinating international knowledge preservation projects, coordinating international networks and organizing meetings and seminars.

The Knowledge Management Specialist is part of a dynamic and team-oriented group of 5 staff.

Main purpose

As a member of a team led by the Unit Head, the Knowledge Management Specialist is involved in project activities, developing and formulating guidance and best practices documents, developing comparative assessment strategies, participating in the establishment and work of new partnerships and networks aimed at promoting nuclear knowledge education, training and knowledge preservation, assisting Member States in enhancing knowledge of best practices in knowledge management techniques and activities, and providing technical assistance at the request of Member States.

Role

The Knowledge Management Specialist is: (1) a technical specialist, managing projects related to knowledge preservation, training and knowledge transfer, as well as other services related to knowledge management; (2) a facilitator of international and regional cooperation projects and of networking in education and training; (3) a liaison/focal point for contacting and building partnerships and networks for transferring nuclear knowledge strategies in Member States; (4) a scientific secretary for meetings on different aspects of nuclear knowledge management.

Partnerships

The Knowledge Management Specialist engages with staff of the Unit, managers in the Section and other areas of the IAEA in achieving desired goals and coordination of cross-cutting activities. The Knowledge Management Specialist is also a team member in the Unit to support internal Agency coordination, collaborating on reports and proposing effective ways to establish new partnerships, as well as supporting national, regional and interregional projects under the Agency's regular and technical cooperation programme.

Functions / Key Results Expected

  • Plan and conduct Technical Meetings in nuclear knowledge management and provide substantive technical input to other Technical Meetings, including assistance in preparing the scope, selecting participants, coordinating the preparation of reports and documentation.
  • Plan and lead review missions, and participate and provide technical input to those missions, preparatory meetings and follow-up visits; provide technical input to the preparation of mission reports.
  • Assist in the evaluation of technical cooperation projects, develop action plans and plan, organize and participate in seminars, workshops, expert missions and training courses.
  • Plan, organize and conduct training for basic topics.
  • Provide support to internal knowledge management initiatives.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Good understanding of nuclear issues.

Education, Experience and Language Skills

  • Advanced university (or equivalent) degree in nuclear science/technology.
  • Five years' working experience in the efficient and effective handling of knowledge in scientific and technical environments.
  • Experience in project management including in information management and knowledge management project coordination.
  • Experience in designing, planning and implementing training courses.
  • Experience in working with multicultural and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Fluency in English. Knowledge of French, Russian or Spanish is an advantage.

NOTE: This is not an established Agency post. It is fixed term temporary assistance post, subject to the availability of funds.

Remuneration

The IAEA offers an attractive remuneration package including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at US $52 408 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance), a variable post adjustment which currently amounts to US $37 052*, dependency benefits, rental subsidy, education grant, relocation and repatriation expenses; 6 weeks' annual vacation, home leave, pension plan and health insurance.
