Organizational Setting

The International Nuclear Information System (INIS) and Nuclear Knowledge Management Section is located in the Department of Nuclear Energy. INIS maintains and enhances a database of over 3 million bibliographic records and 200 000 digital full text documents on the peaceful use of nuclear energy. The incumbent is part of a team and reports to the leader of the content management group. The content management group is part of the INIS Unit. It is responsible for the content analysis and quality control of input to the INIS database.

Main purpose

As part of a team of subject specialists led by the leader of the content management group, the Chemist analyses literature on the peaceful uses of nuclear science and technology for entry into the INIS database, one of the IAEA's sources of high quality, comprehensive and timely information, in order to meet the information needs of Member States and the IAEA.

Role

The incumbent is: (1) an analyst, performing subject analysis in the subject area of chemistry, material science, nuclear fuel cycle activities, radioactive waste management and safeguards; (2) an adviser to the group leader on matters pertaining to the scientific subject aspects of INIS operations in the subject area, including proposals for updating the INIS thesaurus; (3) a team member, working collaboratively on the maintenance and revision of INIS reference manuals and on the continuous improvement of indexing tools, subject analysis and control techniques that ensure appropriate coverage, completeness and timeliness of the database; and (4) an instructor, teaching subject analysis and the use of INIS output products.

Partnerships

In addition to ongoing communication and cooperation with the leader of the content management group and colleagues, the incumbent maintains strong relations with other IAEA staff members, as well as input providers to the INIS database.

Functions / Key Results Expected

  • Analyse and process IAEA and other UN organization publications, as well as electronic input originating from national INIS centres, and provide subject classification, indexing terms, and abstracts as required for the INIS database.
  • Monitor and conduct quality control of input to INIS with regard to the scientific aspects.
  • Contribute to improvements of the subject analysis techniques and retrieval capabilities.
  • Advise and assist the leader of the content management group in matters pertaining to the scientific subject aspects of INIS operations in the related subject area.
  • Propose and implement new terms for the English version of the INIS thesaurus.
  • Participate in the revision of the INIS reference manuals that concern abstracting, indexing, subject category assignment and output utilization practices.
  • Provide training in subject analysis and utilization of the INIS database.

  • Technical expertise: Thorough knowledge of the nuclear fuel cycle, chemistry, material science and radioactive waste management.
  • Analytical skills: Ability to integrate information from a variety of sources and disciplines, including scientific, technical and other information and to incorporate the results into an integrated analytical product.
  • Commitment to continuous learning: Willingness to keep abreast of new developments in the subject areas and to share knowledge with others.
  • Communication skills: Demonstrated ability to speak and write in a clear and concise manner and to deliver effective training courses.

Education, Experience and Language Skills

  • Advanced university (or equivalent) degree in chemistry, materials science, life sciences or biology.
  • At least five years of experience in the use of controlled vocabularies (thesaurus systems).
  • Experience in the use of retrieval techniques and complex databases as well as in indexing and subject analysis.
  • Previous work in a national INIS centre would be an advantage.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English.

Remuneration

The Agency offers an attractive remuneration package including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at US $53 629 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance), a variable post adjustment which currently amounts to US $37 379*, dependency benefits, rental subsidy, education grant, relocation and repatriation expenses; 6 weeks' annual vacation, home leave, pension plan and health insurance.
