Organizational Setting

The Nuclear Data Section, one of four Sections in the Division of Physical and Chemical Sciences in the Department of Nuclear Sciences and Applications, is primarily responsible for the maintenance and provision of a number of high-quality nuclear databases and providing services to users worldwide.

The working environment of the Section is dynamic and collaborative, involving interaction with external counterparts in Member States, from other international organizations and with members of the international scientific community. The Section consists of three Units covering the delivery of data to users, nuclear data development and the provision of atomic and molecular data.

The Section's information technology (IT) systems are managed by the Atomic and Molecular Data Unit. The Section team comprises eleven professional and five support staff, as well as consultants who contribute periodically.

Main purpose

Reporting to the IT Systems Engineer in the Atomic and Molecular Data Unit, the Nuclear Data Analyst contributes to the development of nuclear data software, the production of relational databases and manages the updating of the Section's software. These IT resources assist Member States in enhancing the peaceful use of fission and fusion energy technologies and non-energy applications. He/she also provides technical assistance at the request of Member States.

Role

The Nuclear Data Analyst/Programmer is: (1) a technical specialist, developing the software and relational databases required by the Section; (2) a manager of the maintenance and updating of the Section's nuclear data software; and, (3) a technical expert providing definitive advice on nuclear data software issues to Member States and external organizations.

Education, Experience and Language Skills

  • Advanced university degree in physical sciences, information management or mathematics.
  • At least 5 years' experience in using different programming languages (specifically JAVA and SQL) and DBMSs to store and develop data for multiplatform environments, including substantial experience in a scientific environment. Of those, two years of relevant working experience in an international environment desirable.
  • Experience in database design and interface development.
  • Experience with nuclear reactions or nuclear structure is desirable.
  • Experience of working in a partially decentralized IT development environment and across organizational boundaries is desirable.
