Organizational Setting

The Division of General Services is one of the six Divisions in the Department of Management. The Division of General Services provides service functions through the Director's Office and five Sections: Facilities Management, Seibersdorf Facilities Management, Archives and Records Management, Transport and General Support, and Commissary Management.

The Seibersdorf Facilities Management Section provides site operation technical and administrative services to IAEA laboratory activities in support of programme implementation. These include facility, technical, engineering, property and transport management. The Section has a diverse complement of 25 staff, including technicians, drivers, procurement assistants and IT support.

The Facilities Management Unit is situated in the Seibersdorf Facilities Management Section (SFMS).

The Laboratory is located at the IAEA's Laboratories in Seibersdorf, approximately 45 km south of Vienna.

Main Purpose

Under the guidance and overall supervision of the Supervisor, Maintenance Unit, SFMS, the Handyman assists the Building Services Technician with the maintenance of premises (29,000 m2) and technical installations at the Seibersdorf Laboratories (indoor and outdoor) in compliance with strict safety and security imperatives.

The Laboratories premises include diversified structures such as Clean Laboratories and Nuclear Materials Laboratories with various controlled areas and clean rooms (up to level 1000); Bio-Hazardous Laboratories, fly mass rearing with specially air-conditioned compounds; technical workshops (plumbing, carpentry, electricity, painting, mechanics); conference and training facilities.

Working Relationships

The Handyman is in close contact with the Building Services Technicians and interacts daily with all site staff including staff of AIT (Austrian Institute of Technology).

He/she also interacts with SFMS Procurement Staff at the technical level within the framework of distribution of materials, supplies, and spare parts.

Functions / Key Results Expected

  • Assist Building Services Technician with:
    • unloading and carrying of oversized wooden planks, metal beams, cement and similar materials;
    • mounting and movement of heavy furniture, tools and specialized laboratory equipment and similar items.
  • Fill up of liquid nitrogen tanks and canisters, and organizing delivery and fill up of main storage tank.
  • Pick up and deliver packages, parcels and creates; unpacking items and dispose of packaging.
  • Clean-up and remove debris from rain gutters and other storm water drains and piping.
  • Clean up snow and ice off entrances, stairs and ramps. Apply de-icing chemicals as required.
  • Dispose of refuse, paper, plastic, metal and similar into dedicated containers for recycling or processing.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of regulations and safe handling of hazardous goods and safety precautions needed in cleaning equipment.
  • Good ability to identify quick, effective and reasonable cost fixes and long term solutions without applicable guidelines, user manuals or on-going guidance.
  • Good interpersonal skills, including the ability to prioritise and operate effectively across organizational boundaries and the ability to establish and maintain working relations in a multicultural, multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity.
  • Good organizing skills: Ability to prioritize work assignments, organize own schedule, perform routine work independently and meet deadlines, and adapt to constantly changing demands and multitasking.
  • Good health, physical fitness and strength to carry out strenuous work.
  • Valid Austrian driving license and forklift license is an advantage.
  • Knowledge of the MS Office 2010 package.

Education, Experience and Language Skills

  • Completed secondary education.
  • Some experience in upkeep and cleaning of laboratory and related premises.
  • English Language Test (Level 3) and English Typing Test (Level 2) to IAEA standard.
  • Good knowledge of English. Working knowledge of German desirable. Knowledge of another official IAEA language (i.e. Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish) an advantage.

Remuneration

The IAEA offers an attractive remuneration package including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at €22 937 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance), six weeks' annual vacation, pension plan and health insurance.
